Why Local Nature Matters: Lessons from Wildlife BCN

25th June 2025

The Wildlife Trust for Beds, Cambs and Northants manages more than 100 nature reserves, engages with thousands of children and adults a year at wildlife events, advises farmers and landowners and works in partnership with others to protect nature and habitats across our three counties. The Trust has unveiled its latest five year plan and a major new fund to support an ambitious programme of conservation and public engagement work to the end of the decade.

But why should we work so hard to protect local nature – and is there anything special here to protect? Brian Eversham, CEO of Wildlife Trust BCN will take a look at some of the fascinating plants and animals which rely on local landscapes, some of which are not found anywhere else in the world. Brian will examine the changing fortunes of our region’s ecology, the extinctions and the triumphant come-backs as well as some of the major projects from the 25 year-old Great Fen wetland vision to our newest site Strawberry Hill, a rewilded songbird haven.

After Brian’s talk there will be an opportunity to speak with Wildlife Trust BCN staff to learn about our programme of Wildlife Training Workshops and how you can contribute through surveying, volunteering or joining the Trust. Drinks and snacks will be provided!
