CCI Seminar – Louise Carver – Convivial Conservation
14th May 2025
Louise Carver – Convivial Conservation
Wednesday 14 May, 4pm – 5pm.
Human geographer and political ecologist Louise Carver will speak about work of Convivial Conservation and a programme in the Caribbean unfolding with Jamaican marine restoration partners, the Alligator Head Foundation and TBA21-Academy; a European art, advocacy and ocean literacy research platform.
The talk will explore possibilities for art and culture to open new pathways for conservation practice as well as intervene in its knowledge-governance apparatus towards radical, decolonial and plural futures. Louise will discuss the exhibition she has recently curated, Echoes of the Sanctuary, currently on view at Ocean Space in Venice along-side ‘other mountains, beneath the waves’ showing two Caribbean contemporary artists, and curated by Yina Jiménez Suriel. Echoes of the Sanctuary speculatively explores how convivial conservation may evolve within a Jamaican coral and marine restoration programme and how artistic practice would be a part of this practical experimentation. The project reimagines the emerging Caribbean Blue Economy agenda through historical, interdisciplinary, and critical perspectives combining cultural organising with participatory research, engagement and advocacy.
A drinks reception will follow directly after the talk in the Common Room.
