Background

I am a Geographer, and hold the Moran Chair of Conservation and Development. My research addresses the synergies and tensions between development and conservation, and especially the notion that development might be ‘sustainable’.  I am particularly interested in how conservationists think, and how conservation organizations operate.  I approach these questions from the perspectives of political ecology and environmental history.   I have recently completed a fourth edition of my book Green Development: environment and sustainability in a developing world (Routledge, 2020), and I am currently working with Kent Redford on book on synthetic biology and conservation for Yale University Press, due for publication as Strange Natures: conservation in an era of genome editing in 2021.
